It’s here! We’re up and running, and we’ve got a great opening weekend for you at this year’s The Spree festival.
Our first show is an absolute cracker! Legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi will give a fascinating insight into his life and career in conversation with former Kerrang editor Phil Alexander (Friday 12 October, Paisley Town Hall). When we think of Tony Iommi, we think of heavy rock and of his innovative dark riffs. We think of the beginning of heavy metal. This one’s going to be good…
Our comedy night is completely sold out, but we’ve got the promise of a bit of extra late-night Spree fun with a free Spree Ceilidh in the Spiegeltent from 11pm…come on, you know the moves, get along and hit the dancefloor!
The Spree for All fringe festival programme is bigger and better than ever this year, with events taking place across Renfrewshire. It kicks off in Johnstone on Friday 12 October at The Hazel with a special samba drumming workshop (5pm-7pm) and then fantastic local live acts Mandulu & Hephzibah, Elemental and the Lynsey Dolan Band. For families, we’ve got a couple of great Wee Spree activities lined up. The National Theatre of Scotland are bringing the amazing DO’S & DON’TS experience to Paisley for the duration of the festival, starting on Friday 12 October – you really need to read more about this one to understand just what a treat it’ll be.
For the first time, The Spree will welcome the National Whisky Festival – Scotland’s best celebration of all things uisge-beatha – to Paisley. Two sessions in Paisley Town Hall (Saturday 13 October, 12pm & 4.15pm) offer you the chance to sample from 50 whiskies on the tasting floor, try a whisky masterclass and much more.
We’ve got two cracking gigs in the Spiegeltent on Saturday evening/night. Tracyanne & Danny and The Pastels will share an unmissable double bill (Saturday 13 October, 7.30pm) and ex-Kraftwek member Wolfgang Flür will play a late-night session (Saturday 13 October, 11pm)
It’s a busy day at The Wee Spree. We’ll have the first showing of Cosmopot – a magical space full of bubbles, star-gazing and teapots – which plays for duration of the festival; a Gaelic music showcase and family ceilidh from the team at Fèis Phàislig; and the Starcatchers will bring their Sprog Rock show to The Spree.
There’s loads going on at the Spree for All. We’ve got Spree for Alls at the Linwood Bowling Club (read more) and Lochbarr Leisure Centre in Lochwinnoch (read more) with plenty of great live music, and Scottish Fiction will bring a label showcase to Paisley’s Bungalow Bar (Saturday 13 October, 7.30pm) featuring Foreignfox, Mt. Doubt, Acrylic and Home$lice.
We’re delighted to have The Wandering Hearts at this year’s festival (Sunday 14 October, 7.30pm) – their album Wild Silence was recently voted UK Country Album of the Year 2018. With support from popular local singer-songwriter Michael Cassidy, this will be a great way to end your weekend…
We’ll have a full midweek listing for you too…keep supporting The Spree!
